Port Hope Police Launch Pilot Project for Body Worn Cameras

Police in Port Hope will be wearing an extra piece of equipment as part of a pilot project.

Starting September 11th, 2024, body-worn cameras (BWC) were rolled out on a trial basis for frontline members.

"We want to let the community know that the Port Hope Police Service has entered into a pilot study around the use of Body Warn Cameras. Our goal is to always be as transparent as possible and to provide the most accurate record available of interactions between police officers and civilians. We will gauge how this technology enhances the overall safety of officers and civilians in Port Hope,” said Chief Tim Farquharson.

The program will run through September with two officers wearing cameras for the duration of their shift.

When the pilot program ends, a report will be presented to the Police Services Board to determine how and if the technology will be implemented on a permanent basis.
