Internet Safety (Youths)
- You should never give out personal information such as your address, phone number, real name, or the address of your school to anyone on the internet. If you meet someone in a chat session, it would not be a good idea to give out personal information. There are other situations where you might be asked for personal information. For example, many sites ask for your name, address, etc. on a registration page. Get permission from your parents before filling out any online forms.
- You should never give out family information (such as a parent's credit car number) to individuals you meet online. In addition, never give out the name of your parent's employers.
- Do not send anyone your picture without getting permission from your parents.
- Never agree to meet with someone you met online unless you get permission from your parents. If a meeting is to take place, make sure you take a parent with you and the meeting is in a public place such as a shopping mall.
- Do not answer any message that is mean or makes you feel uncomfortable. If you get such a message, keep it on the screen and go tell your parents so they can notify your Internet Service Provider.
- There are both good and bad places on the Internet. You should know that although some sites are monitored as safe sites for kids, most of the sites on the Internet are not monitored.
- In addition to all this, treat others as you would want to be treated! The lessons you are taught about this in the real world apply just as well to your time on the Internet.
- Talk to your parents and agree on the rules for going online. You can agree on things like, when, how long and where you can and can't go on the Internet. Remember to stick by whatever agreement you make.
