Listed below are some of the various units that make up the Port Hope Police Service

Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB)

Crimes involving organized crime including street gangs, drug offences such as production and trafficking, major cases such as homicide, abduction, organized or multiple break and enters are usually turned over to investigators in the Criminal Investigation Branch or C.I.B. It's the job of these officers to put together the pieces of the crime in order to make an arrest. There are presently two investigators assigned to this Unit.

Major investigations such as murder or mysterious disappearances will be assigned a Major Case Manager. It will be that person's responsibility to ensure the proper procedures and protocols are followed by the investigative team to allow for a successful conclusion to the case.

Intelligence Section

As part of the CIB office, officers also have the role of being Intelligence Officers. Intelligence Services is the gathering of information that is then shared with all officers in the Police Service to assist in preventing and solving crimes. The officers in the CIB unit partner with CISO, the Criminal Investigations Services of Ontario, to gather information from all parts of Ontario, Canada and the internationally for the purpose of crime prevention. The officers will review all information that comes through their office and use that to assist other officers with on-going investigations or set the wheels in motion to begin an investigation into criminal activity.

Scenes of CRIME (IDENT)

Not all criminal investigations are cut and dry. Sometimes the evidence needed to make an arrest could be a small piece of fibre, a drop of blood or a fingerprint. In those instances the officers in the Scenes of Crime Unit are the ones called in.

There is presently one Identifications officer who heads the Unit. This officer is assisted by a group of Scenes of Crime Officers also known as SOCO officers. Theses SOCO officers attend crime scenes to gather photographic and physical evidence of a crime, properly collect it and prepare all samples for expert review. If items cannot be dealt with by the Identifications Officer, they are sent to the Canadian Centre of Forensics Sciences for analysis.

Accident Investigations Specialist (AIS)

These AIS officer attends motor vehicle collisions scenes that are serious in nature, mostly those involving serious injuries or death. The officer gathers photographic and physical evidence that would allow the complete re-construction of an accident in an attempt to get the factual chain of events that preceded an accident, that occurred during the accident, and that followed the accident. The Ident Unit may be called to assist to gather photographic and physical evidence if criminal charges may result from the investigation.
